What's in The Name?

They brought in the two disciples and demanded, "By what power, or in whose name, have you done this?" Acts 4:7

Peter and John had just brought healing through the name of Jesus to a lame man.  They weren't being questioned for just any name they used, but because the miracle was done through the name of Jesus.

This was more than a healing.  It was yet another direct blow to the core of the religious system that was entangling people rather than releasing them.

Some of those questioning Peter and John were Sadducees who did not believe in the resurrection of the dead.  Matthew 27:52 tells us when Jesus released his spirit (when he died) the earth and tombs opened for many godly men and women who had died and were raised from the dead. They left the cemetery after Jesus resurrection, went into Jerusalem and appeared to many people!
How could they continue to deny the resurrection when faced with a live 'dead person'?

Peter and John were put in prison for preaching and healing in the name of Jesus, a dead man.  Did the religious leaders really think this would stop the power and spread of the Name they were so afraid of?  Even in prison the power of the Name transcended confinement.

Children in Biblical times were named with great significance and meaning, names weren't just given because they sounded good.

The Greek word for name in Acts 4:7 literally means everything the thought or feeling of which is aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing or remembering the name including one's rank, authority, interests, pleasure, command, excellences, deeds etc.

So what does Jesus name represent?
  • He was given this specific name by God Jo17:12
  • Jesus protected the disciples by the power of the name God gave him Jo 17:12
  • God will grant our requests because of Jesus name Jo16:23-24
  • We can go directly to Father God with our requests, no intermediary is necessary Jo16:23-24
  • Salvation is only in his name Acts 2:21; 4:12
  • Boldness and power come in his name Acts 4:29-30
  • All will submit to and confess his name, even evil Phil 2:10-11
  • His name is above every other name recognized by God and evil Phil 2:9
  • All the fullness of God exists in his name Col 1:19
  • The world, seen and unseen, exists and is held together through his name Col 1:15-17
  • He has always existed, no beginning and no end to his name Col1:17
  • His followers have his Authority over all power of the enemy through his name Luke 10:19; Acts 16:16-18
  • Forgiveness of sins Luke 24:47; Acts 13:38; Galatians 1:4
  • Healing comes through his name Acts 4:10
  • Eternal life comes through his name 1John 5:13
  • Peace in the midst of hardship John 16:33
  • Deliverance from addictions Romans 6; 8:12-13

This list is not all inclusive; to be so would take volumes of books.  Rather an encouragement to realize we don't need to live a powerless and mundane life as a Jesus follower.

In order to follow someone we need to understand who and what that person stands for. Take the responsibility and search the scriptures for yourself, look for and understand the one whose name you take (Christian).  Discover the rich and abundant life only available through the Name of Jesus Christ.

He is either the embodiment of Truth or the best con artist the world and history has ever known.
What does his name mean to you?

A Watchman In Prayer

Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord.
Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly. Psalm 5:3

This verse has always inspired and moved me to belief-action.  When I begin to feel as though my prayers are just words I am always reminded of David and his burning passion and intimacy with God.  This reminder was not just David’s but is as necessary for us today as is breathing for our physical bodies.

Do we really pray expecting God to answer or do we wait until the answer is known before we become expectant?

God spoke through the prophet Isaiah, “I publicly proclaim bold promises.    I do not whisper obscurities in some dark corner. I would not have told the people of Israel to seek me I could not be found.  I, the Lord, speak only what is true and declare only what is right.” (Is 45:19)
“Listen! The Lord’s arm is not too weak to save you, nor is his ear too deaf to hear you call.” (Is 59:1)

Micah declared, “As for me, I look to the Lord for help. I wait confidently for God to save me, and my God will certainly hear me.” Micah 7:7

Today can we really trust God will hear us, even want to hear us?  Is his ear only bent toward some and not others?

Expectantly in Psalm 5:3 means to look out or about, spy, keep watch, observe, watch, watch closely.  This is similar to a watchman on the city walls looking intently and waiting expectantly.

What does a watchman do?
1.  Stays alert
AT ALL TIMES……“Keep alert at all times. And pray that you might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors and stand before the Son of Man.” (Luke 21:36)

IN PERSISTENCE….. And so I tell you keep on asking, and you will receive…Keep on seeking, and you will find…Keep on knocking and the door will be open.” (Lk 11:9-10); Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere. (Eph 6:18)

WITH A THANKFUL HEART… Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart. (Col 4:2)

2.  Announces what he sees/hears
OPPOSITION…Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8

VICTORY… You were dead because of your sins…Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins.  He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross.  In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities.  He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross. Col 2:1-15
 3.  Keeps guard of an entrance
TO THE HEART…Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. 1 Corinthians 16:13

TO THE MIND…Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. Phil 4:7

TO THE MOUTHTake control of what I say, O Lord, and guard my lips.
Don’t let me drift toward evil or take part in acts of wickedness.
Don’t let me share in the delicacies (gossip??) of those who do wrong. Ps 141:3-4

4.  Sits high above so he can see over what he guards
THERE IS NO OTHER POWER OR AUTHORITY ABOVE OUR GOD… Now he is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else—not only in this world but also in the world to come. Ephesians 1:21
Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. Matthew 6:33

And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house, let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.
Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise. Hebrews 10:21-23

Fan the flame

This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you when I laid my hands on you.  For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.  Through the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us, carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to you.
2 Timothy 1:6-7, 14

Every fall my nephew has a huge bonfire and then bakes the most delicious pizzas in his outdoor oven.  The scent of wood burning pizza and the bonfire sticks to our clothes for days bringing with it the sweet remembrance of times spent with each other.  I thought of him when I read this verse.  The bonfire starts off with a strategically placed Tepee built with different size tree limbs and trunks.  Although powerful looking it serves no purpose until it is lit and nursed into a strong powerful heat source.  When the time is right, the spark is lit and the night sky becomes brilliant with the light from the fire.  The outside temperature can be in the teens and yet the closer we get to the fire the warmer the air around us becomes.

The spiritual gift God gave to Timothy, and likewise to each of us, started with a spark.  The wood for the bonfire had been instilled in Timothy as a youth by his godly mother and grandmother.  Now was the time Timothy would have to ‘fan into flames’ that spark through exercising the power of the Holy Spirit living within him.  Flames will not come when wood is wet and likewise our faith will not grow when saturated with fear and anxiety.  These do not come from the Holy Spirit but rather the enemy trying to keep the bonfire from existing.

Timothy didn't know the exact outcome of the flames any more than we know the end of the dreams and visions God plants in our hearts.  We don’t need to know, we just need to fan those dreams and visions with the power of the Holy Spirit by renewing our minds daily with his word and his strength.  Our controlling and manipulation will always leave us with wet wood.  God’s word stands guard over that precious truth and he will bring it to pass in his timing.   He then becomes our source of power, love and self-discipline, and strength…never be extinguished.
